The Best 85-inch TVs of the Year(2024): Tested and reviewed!

Hi there, fellow watchers of television! The competition to create the best home viewing experience is fiercer than ever as we approach 2024. An 85-inch TV could be the ideal complement to your living room setup if you’ve been dreaming of having a cinematic retreat. Today, we’re going to examine more closely at the top 85-inch TVs of the year, all of which have been put through rigorous testing to guarantee that they live up to the promises of stunning images and innovative features.

While an 85-inch TV may be too big for some people, they do make amazing displays for YouTube, sports, games, and other content. You might be shocked to learn that a variety of 85-inch TVs can be purchased for less than $3,000, even though they may not be the most affordable items available.

We’ve gathered some of the best models in the over 80-inch TV category and examined every aspect, including price and promise, as well as overall performance and HDR brightness. It is undesirable to be forced to use a large screen that falls short of your primary TV watching requirements, particularly if it is an expensive underperformer.

At Tom’s Guide, we have years of TV testing under our belts. Pitting major offerings against each other, as seen in the LG C4 OLED vs the LG B4 OLED faceoff, little gets left on the table when it comes to considering the best 85-inch TVs across the market. From the high-flying LG G3 OLED to the budget-friendly Hisense U6K Mini-LED, let’s take a peak at 2024’s best TV offerings in the over 80-inch range.

At the tear-inducing price of $6,299, LG’s G3 OLED serves as the most premium option and the best among 85-inch displays. It’s powered by LG’s a9 AI Processor Gen6, which allows it incredible range in a variety of content most notably viewed through the highly popular Brightness Booster Max feature.

But what about audio? Well, the LG G3 OLED doesn’t have the best sound profile, but its 4.2-channel 60W speaker is serviceable, but no Alicia Keys. Even with its Dolby Atmos support, you may want to pair it alongside a budget soundbar option. As for general performance, the G3 shines best through its 1,361 nits of peak HDR brightness, which puts it toe to toe with the Samsung S95C, one of the best TVs in the market.

Built on LG’s evo panel, the G3 also has a remarkable screen period. Gaming couldn’t get any better when utilizing this display. Thanks to Game Optimizer, gamers can experience the dread-inducing darkness of “Alan Wake 2” in its most ideal form through enhancements like VRR, 9.2ms of input lag, and a variety of awesome picture modes to make the experience truly pop.

Although it might be getting the backseat against this year’s LG M4 OLED, the G3 is still one of the sleekest OLED TVs you can buy and remains a powerful option in the over 80-inch category.

There’s a ton to love about Samsung’s QN90C, which remains one of our highest rated displays of 2023 and may well be one of the company’s best TVs to date. The QN90C leverages all of the best industry standards, including 4 HDMI 2.1 inputs, HDR10+, and an ATSC 3.0 tuner, but what makes it stand out most is its use of QLED panel technology.

What about its sound potential, though? Well, you’d be surprised to find that the QN90C has arguably one of the best speakers in the industry — though you won’t be getting any Dolby Atmos support as the firm is working on its own iteration of the surround sound profile alongside Google.

As for gaming, the QN90C works like a charm. You’ll not only be able to pair this display alongside a new PlayStation 5 Slim and get ample performance through ALLM and other awesome features, but you’ll also be able to take advantage of Samsung’s Game Hub, which lets users play Xbox Game Pass and Nvidia GeForce Now games via the cloud.

The QN90C does, however, come with a pretty hefty price at 85-inch hitting that oh-so-expensive $4,799 mark. It’s definitely worth every penny though, as you won’t be disappointed with its near 2,000 nits of HDR brightness in tandem with a color accuracy that hits 99.77% of the Rec709 gamut.

Samsung QN900C Neo QLED 8K TV

  • Unrivaled brightness
  • One Connect box
  • Full HDMI 2.1 support on all ports
  • Excellent gaming features

The Samsung QN900C Neo QLED 8K TV is certainly a mouthful but it will leave you speechless in its masterful display potential. It’s use of 8K resolution, which remains niche as of yet, gives it a world of wonder in terms of clarity, picture quality, and brightness, yet it also comes at an astronomical price tag of $8,000.

As one might expect, the QN900C is no slouch. It comes equipped with a full array of HDMI 2.1 inputs, a 144Hz refresh rate, a 6.2.4-channel speaker, and Samsung’s One Connect box for wireless connectivity. It essentially pulls out all the stops, sporting a peak luminance of 2,433.6 nits in line with a color profile that covers 99.13% of the Rec709 Gamut.

While it does upscale content to the appropriate resolution, one should note that there really isn’t any 8K content available yet, nor do games hit that threshold. Still, if you’re not too worried about spending major money on a massive display, this is definitely the option for you.

LG C3 OLED

It’s hard to knock LG’s C3 OLED, which comes heralded as one of the best OLEDs at an affordable clip. That’s not to say its 83-inch model will come cheap, though, as $5,299 is no steal, but at least it comes with a host of awesome features, namely one of the most streamlined smart platforms in the market.

The LG C3 OLED comes with practically everything you’d ever want in a TV; Dolby Atmos, Dolby Vision, HDR10, 120Hz refresh rate, 40W speaker, and VRR — though you will be missing out on an ATSC 3.0 tuner if that’s your thing, which seems to be a commonality across 2024 LG TVs.

The LG C3 OLED is also marked as one of the best gaming TVs, as it leverages both AMD FreeSync and Nvidia G-Sync to limit screen tearing, in addition to ALLM. LG’s Game Optimizer is a blessing for those looking to get the most out of this OLED as it offers a suite of enhancements to its gaming potential, like getting an FPS counter on-screen or changing to Boost mode for 9.1ms of input lag.

At 83-inch, the C3 OLED may not hit that 85-inch threshold, but it still offers a world of fun in a thin-bezel design. Just be sure to take the TV out of its default picture mode, Auto Power Save, so you don’t get bogged down with unnatural colors.

Hisense U8K ULED TV

Hisense U8K is a beast of an 85-inch mini-LED TV

Hisense U8K ULED TV

  • Refresh Rate: 120 Hz
  • HDMI ports: 4 HDMI (2 HDMI 2.1)
  • Size: 57.2 × 35.9 × 14.8 inches
  • Weight: 56.4 pounds

REASONS TO BUY

  • Extremely bright
  • Incredibly colorful
  • Great sound quality
  • Built-in ATSC 3.0 tuner

TODAY’S BEST DEALS

As mini-LED TVs go, the Hisense U8K is certainly at the top of the totem pole, especially for those looking to nab the widest screen real estate. It’s marked similarly as a value performer, utilizing some insane specs to allow for a price to performance ratio that’s potentially one of the best on the block.

The Hisense U8K comes with a host of major positives felt across its color, brightness output, sound quality, and included features. It’s also among the best gaming TVs due to an input lag that sits around 13.2ms in addition to four total HDMI 2.1 ports.

But where the U8K really shines is in its peak brightness. For SDR content, we tested the Hisense U8K at 1,536 nits, whereas HDR content was as much as 1,788 nits of peak brightness. The U8K also doesn’t slouch with its sound profile, leveraging a 2.1.2 speaker for crystal clear audio so you won’t have to pair it with one of the best sound bars if you don’t want to.

Hisense U6K Mini-LED

A mini-LED TV that delivers surprisingly good performance

Hisense U6K Mini-LED

SPECIFICATIONS

  • Available Screen Sizes: 55, 65, 75, 85 inches
  • Screen Type: Mini-LED
  • Refresh Rate: 60 Hz
  • HDMI ports: 4 HDMI 2.0
  • Size: 57.1 x 33.1 x 3.1 inches
  • Weight: 43.1 pounds

REASONS TO BUY

  • Mini-LED display
  • Excellent color and contrast
  • 65-inch under $500

TODAY’S BEST DEALS

As one of 2023’s best budget TVs, it comes as no surprise that the Hisense U6K Mini-LED makes itself known as a powerful contender in the 85-inch display space. Given its price point, which sits at around $1,400 for the 85-inch model, the U6K doesn’t have the most tech-savvy specs, but it does offer consumers a cost-friendly approach to utilizing the biggest screen possible.

In our in-depth review of the U6K, we found that the display checks all the right boxes despite its limited reach. Testing data shows the TV leveraging a peak HDR brightness of 525 nits in addition to hitting as much as 99% of the Rec. 709 Gamut, which equates to some top-tier performance for such an incredibly inexpensive TV.

Still, downsides are aplenty with this ultra budget option, best of all witnessed in its limited gaming potential. The U6K doesn’t come equipped with any HDMI 2.1 ports nor does it have a panel that can hit over 60Hz, making it a rather poor option for big screen gaming. But, if you are looking for something a little more cost effective in the 85-inch range, the Hisense U6K Mini-LED is a perfect pick.

How to pick your ideal 85-inch television

Seek for an 85-inch TV by using the advice in our TV Buying Guide. You can enjoy your TV purchase for many years to come if you give it some thought and decide what you really need from it.

Size: First, decide if you’re locked into an 85-inch model. You’ll find more options in 65- and 75-inch models and often better values.

Keep in mind that the TV should fit the room it is in. It is recommended to sit at least 85 inches away from an 85-inch 4K TV in order to enjoy a clear and crisp picture. The TV itself is 75 inches broad. (Read more in our post on the ideal TV size to purchase.)

Price: These 85-inch TVs can cost anywhere from $1,700 to $5,000, but if you shop around—for example, during Black Friday or the Super Bowl—you might be able to get some models at a significant discount.

Installation: Plan to have at least one extra set of hands around when setting up an 85-inch TV; all the TVs on this list weigh more than 100 pounds and are really large.

However, don’t discount wall mounting. The top TV mounts and other common VESA mounting brackets are compatible with these models.

Ports and features: All these TVs have four HDMI ports, which is generally the most you’ll find on any TV, and several have at least one port that supports HDMI 2.1, the latest standard. If you plan to use a sound bar, pick a TV that supports HDMI ARC, which lets you connect to the sound bar with a single cable. You may also want a TV that supports Bluetooth so you can listen on your headphones without disturbing people around you.
